If there\u2019s one thing that Facebook has done for the world of dating and relationships, it\u2019s made the question, \u201cWhat are we, anyway?\u201d <\/em>come up for both men and women alike.\u00a0 Some people actually measure the \u201cvalidity\u201d of a relationship based on whether or not their partner changes his or her status and makes it known to the virtual world!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

So, how do you know when you\u2019re \u201cofficially\u201d in a relationship?\u00a0 Well, to quote my sister and business partner, Michelle:<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

You\u2019re not<\/strong> in a relationship… until you are<\/b>!<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the biggest issues single ladies face is not knowing when they are actually in a relationship.\u00a0 Is it when you’ve dates someone for a predetermined amount of time or a certain number of dates?\u00a0 Is it when he asks you to stay over? When he introduces you to his friends and family?<\/p>\n

Compound all of this with reality that men and women approach dating and relationships differently, and it’s not hard to understand why perhaps seeing that someone changes his relationship status on line makes what’s been taking place between the two of them seem “official”!<\/p>\n

Perhaps one of the biggest<\/strong><\/em> differences between men and women when it comes to dating is this:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Men go out on dates.\u00a0 Women go out relationships!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Laugh if you like, but you know on some level that it\u2019s true.\u00a0 You\u2019re sitting there on a date, having a wonderful piece of salmon while he eats his steak.\u00a0 He mentions how he loves snorkeling.\u00a0 All of a sudden, you\u2019re in your head:<\/p>\n

\u201cI love snorkeling, but\u2026 Oh, my! I\u2019m nowhere near bikini- or bathing suit-ready!\u00a0 \u00a0I need to start working out!\u00a0 And, I wonder where we\u2019ll go?<\/i> The Florida Keys? Hawaii? Yes,\u00a0 Hawaii!\u00a0 I\u2019ve always wanted to go to there… and it would be the perfect place to go on our honeymoon!\u00a0 Oh, my goodness! How romantic! We\u2019re going to have such a great time!<\/i><\/p>\n

And, while you\u2019re making plans to book a few sessions with a personal trainer and start looking at travel brochures, what\u2019s he doing?\u00a0 He still enjoying his steak!\u00a0 When this happens, not only are you not present to what\u2019s happening on the date, but now you\u2019re so focused on a future that isn\u2019t even happening<\/i>, that you\u2019re missing really important information and signals that might let you know whether or not this is someone that you\u2019d want <\/i>to go on a second date, much less, snorkeling with!<\/p>\n

Now, that\u2019s only on the first few dates, but, what about when you begin seeing each other more consistently?<\/p>\n

If you ask most women, it\u2019s at about the 3-month mark that they begin to wonder whether or not they are in a relationship.\u00a0 Now the temptation rises to bring it up\u00a0\u2013 to tell him, \u201cWe need to talk \u201d\u00a0\u2013<\/i> which by the way, is like the \u201ckiss of death\u201d when it comes to inviting someone (especially a man) to have a conversation!\u00a0 And, usually, the announcement that we need to talk is followed by a barrage of questions about where he sees this relationship going and what his intentions <\/i>are.<\/p>\n

Now, do I think it\u2019s important to know whether the person you\u2019re dating is on the same page as you, as far as wanting to have a committed relationship that leads to marriage?\u00a0 Yes!<\/p>\n

However, putting him in the uncomfortable position of now having to answer the machine gun of questions may feel like \u201cpressure\u201d and it cheats you<\/i><\/b> out of hearing him <\/i><\/b>say, \u201cI don\u2019t want to see anyone else, and I\u2019d like it if you felt the same way.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 He may not say it in those exact<\/em> words, but, trust me, if you release the need to control the way things go, he will <\/i><\/b>be the one to bring it up!\u00a0 And there\u2019s nothing sweeter than hearing him say that because he wants to<\/i> date you exclusively and not<\/span> because he feels like he has to<\/i>!<\/p>\n

But what if your guy hasn\u2019t updated his status or brought up the subject of commitment or exclusivity?\u00a0 Well, then, pay attention.\u00a0 Look for the signs around you.<\/p>\n

Is he making time to see you?\u00a0 Does he go out of his way to please and see you happy?\u00a0 Are there other ways that he\u2019s letting you know in his actions and words that he\u2019s not interested in seeing or being with anyone else but you?<\/p>\n

If not, you may want to reconsider whether you want to continue investing your heart, time and attention in a friendship (with or without benefits) that isn\u2019t going where you\u2019d like it to.\u00a0 But, if there are<\/strong> signs that he\u2019s moving toward making a commitment to you, then just breathe, get present, and allow the relationship to unfold naturally<\/em>.\u00a0 You\u2019ll enjoy the ride much better when you\u2019re not the one at the wheel, and you\u2019ll get to enjoy the sweet joy of knowing that he can\u2019t imagine being with anyone other than you!<\/p>\n
