Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person they are almost indistinguishable.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

When people think about \u201cgood communication,\u201d they usually think about how effectively they can say or deliver their message.\u00a0 As we saw in a blog posted earlier this week, when we discussed the power of your words<\/a>, it is important to say what you want to say with love and respect.\u00a0 Listening, however, can be an even more important aspect of communication.\u00a0 The way we listen can actually communicate love more loudly<\/em> than anything we can say.<\/p>\n

If we listen with the intention of figuring out what we are going to say in response to what the other person is saying, we are not being present in the conversation.\u00a0 If we are listening through a preconceived \u201cfilter\u201d of how we already see and hear the person who is speaking \u2013 filled with judgment, lack of belief, etc. \u2013 then we may miss what the person is trying to tell us.\u00a0 And, if we allow ourselves to get \u201ctriggered\u201d during the conversation, we can totally miss the \u201cheart message<\/a>\u201d behind the words being spoken.<\/p>\n

Contrarily, if we choose to listen \u2013 to truly hear<\/em> the person, the message, and the possibilities behind what is being shared \u2013 even if it\u2019s uncomfortable to hear\u2026 even if there\u2019s something we\u2019d like to say about it\u2026 even if we\u2019re not sure where the conversation will lead\u2026 If we can commit to just listening<\/i>, we give the person speaking the gift of feeling like he\/she is being heard, \u201cgotten,\u201d and loved.\u00a0 And, in this act of listening, we give ourselves a gift, too, because, as we listen, we may discover something new about the person and <\/i>ourselves, we may finally hear the message we\u2019ve been waiting and hoping to hear, and may just experience the love, intimacy<\/a>, and connection our hearts desire.<\/p>\n
